Purses Galore

Tonight Mom and I finished lining the Ocean Waves purse and attaching the handles. I think it looks really great and I was able to fit all my junk in it. I went to Loops again this afternoon, after my sister went to a bunch of educational supply stores to get stuff for her new classroom. I bought the supplies to make the "Little Mouse Purse" by Billie Anne Griggs, who also designed the Ocean Waves purse. The Little Mouse Purse is so adorable that i am going to make one for A-dolly and probably myself, cause I think it would be fun to take to work (accounting clerks can have fun purses even in corporate America). I really like the feel of the yarn that the designer chose. It's a cotton blend, which is perfect for Oklahoma summers. I'm such a purse fanatic that it's no surprise to me that all my recent crochet projects have been purses.

hmm, not much else is going on. I'm going to cut out a bunch of sports articles to send to my cousin in Iraq. he really loves sports and newspaper articles are really easy to slip into a box and he enjoys reading them. I've been also rocking out to Def Leppard's greatest hits this evening (hey, i'm a child of the 80s) and I've been listening to R.E.M. during my work commute.

My classes start this week too. I just hope I can stay awake during my night classes...LOL.

FO (sort of)

So last night I finished crocheting the Ocean Waves purse. My mom is going to whipstitch it together and sew in the lining, but we are having a hell of a a time finding a color to go with fushia and dusty rose. We looked through our stash and everything we have is too red or too pink. I think I'm going to have to suck it up and go to Hobby Lobby.

Our darling neighbors informed us that our water main has been leaking onto their driveway for the last four days. what the hell? Back in Iowa, our neighbors would've told us right upon discovery of said leak. so my dad had to call one of those on call plumbers to fix it. we have water to the house, but we have to call a landscaper to fix the irrigation system line. lol.

Such is life. it is hot and i don't know what to craft next. does anyone know what to do with a whole massive hank of natural white bulky weight alpaca from ecuador?

One Skein Musings

So I had sent off my final package to Melinda, who I have been sending to in the One Skein swap all summer and forgot that I can actually reveal my identity in in this swap, cause I think all I said was my name. That is typical of me, head stuck in the clouds. So this post is for her, so that she can know more about me. Hmm, I will be 26 on the 25th of September and I am still infatuated with hello kitty and have been since like age 3. I love Grey's Anatomy and Gilmore Girls. I have an affinity for green and yellow tractors and love all kinds of music from Brad Paisley to Slipknot and everything in between. i am still learning how to hand knit but I can fly when it comes to machine knitting or crochet. In fact, I am like 15 rows from completing the Ocean Waves purse (crochet). I love, love, love yarn. My stash is crammed into a three foot deep plastic orange tub that I have to sit on to shut the lid and a Born shoebox that I have to put a giant rubber band around to shut the lid. I love blues, purples, and hot pink. i don't have kids but I have two little Yorkies that eat better than I do. I am also a bookworm in the midst of reading Mockingbird: A portrait of Harper Lee by Charles L. Shields, which is really good especially if you are a Harper Lee or Truman Capote fan like me.

Get your kicks on I-44

So from Friday until Sunday, i was in three different states, and the subaru consumed 1.5 ish tanks of gas. It was all worth it though cause I got to hang out with work buddies and see Sunshine and his lovely Chateau. I finished crocheting another dishcloth and my mom deciphered the purse pattern for me, so if i had free time during the week, i could actually start crocheting the purse. more than likely, i won't make any actual progress on it until this coming weekend, since it is month-end at work. It is really stinking hot here, it's been like 100 + degrees for the last few weeks. Too bad there isn't any accounting schools in the South Pole, cause that polar air would feel really nice right about now. i had breakfast this morning at the world's largest mc donalds on my way home this morning. I love driving underneath it. that is just so much fun. Stop laughing, Sunshine, that place makes me happy.

There's not a whole lot to report about this weekend. Well, that i would write on the internets anyways. even though i don't give a lot of specifics, things could still be googled. Lol. i did buy the new Peaches cd at best buy this weekend. It is so much fun to listen to even though the lyrics are quite raunchy. this would not be a carpool cd, more like a driving by myself down the interstate cd.

Yarn Love

So, yesterday, to make a long story short, i finally got to go to a REAL yarn shop. Not like cross stitching and then some yarn. I was in Tulsa with my lil sis helping her find new teacher clothes and I remembered that there was this shop called Loops in Utica Square, that is really only a year old. However, I hadn't been there yet, because i don't like to go to Tulsa by myself and usually we just go to Owasso which is closer to us to shop at places like Old Navy and Tar-jay. I wasn't sure what to expect, cause I never been to a shop that was just for like yarn and knitting and crochet too. Right when I walked in, I fell in love. You would think the first thing my eyes would fall for would've been some pricey yarn, nope...I saw the big flat screen Mac monitor at the cash register. It was probably a 19", 17" at the smallest. I knew I belonged there, even though I was experiencing massive yarn awe. they have projects made up from current knitting and crochet books and magazines. The funny thing is that I recognized a lot of them from the books and magazines. They had a Lucy bag made up in this really pretty shade of blue, which I was excited to see since I had recently received the pattern for it. They make their own patterns at the store, and I fell in love with the "Ocean Waves Purse" pattern by Billie Anne Grigg. I ended up buying 3 hanks of Rowan Summer Tweed to make this purse, plus the purse handles, cause i knew I would be able to find something like them at home. it's a crochet pattern and it will be sooo awesome when it's done. A really cool summery purse. i allowed myself this little spurge because i have really probably cut my spending in half at least, and it's special yarn, it's ROWAN yarn, and I love it....i will definitely have to go back to this place, hopefully carrying around my Ocean Waves purse, cause they had loads and loads and loads of cool stuff, there. Did I mention that they will wind your yarn into little yarn cakes for you? The answer to my prayers.

In other news, just counting down the days until I start school again. This time it shouldn't be too bad though, cause I'm just taking two night classes and they are taught by the same teacher. I did finally wash all the mud off my car. This weeked kicked off RAGBRAI XXXIV, featuring a cameo appearance by Lance Armstrong later on in the ride. I have been following it via the web since I am far away from all the action. Other than that, not much else is going on.

Lucky Me!

So after one long ass Monday I finally arrived home and found a totally awesome package from my RAOK pal on Iowa Chicks Knitting...I love the stitch markers, I have always admire people that have the patience to make beaded stitch markers. When ever i try to make contact with beads, I end up flinging them all over the 70s shag carpet, never to be seen again. Then there was a cute card that had pink and a sheep on it and a piece of paper with the same design (which i am debating what to make with it). I just love sheep. Unfortunately my littlest Yorkie has discovered how to hit the button on my sheep tape measure and she drags it around the yard by the tape. She had to have a time-out after I caught her in the act. Thou shalt not mess with my knitting/crochet notions. It's like the 12th commandment, right after thou shalt not covet another's yarn stash..LOL...As if that wasn't enough to make my day, there was a pattern for The Lucy Bag and Heart Socks, soooo cool, I must learn how to make these this fall ( i am taking real knitting classes so that i can hand knit something bigger then a coaster). And then there was the yarn, in my colors! Two little skeins of Knit Picks 'Dancing' and one skein of Cascade Pastaza, which feels so good even when it is 103 outside, it's like 70 in my little bat cave, electric bill be damned, i am from Iowa and I will melt in extreme heat...

Thank you so much, Calamknitty! You did a five star job, I just love everything. I must go now and do a happy yarn dance...

Thank-you One Skein Secret Pal

So while i was in Iowa, I received my package from my One Skein Secret Pal. I can't thank you enough!!!! I received a skein of Rowan chunky print in lovely shades of pinks and purples, blues and greens and yellows. I love that weight of yarn too! It's my first skein of Rowan so my wool deprived soul is very excited. She also sent me a really pretty hand-made beaded stitch marker that is soo cool. I just love everything that my pal sent. Now, I just have to decide what i will make with it....

4th of July fun

So I am back from the great homeland and I REALLY DIDN'T want to leave....I got to spend lots of time with my little goddaughter A-Dolly. We read books and smashed play-doh and colored outside the lines. I spoiled her rotten, she is a girl after my own heart. Seriously, when a two year old girl with ringlets of girls runs towards you and gives you a big hug and smiles at you and says "i love you, " it melts your heart, even mine that has a dim view on love right now.

I shopped til I dropped at the outlet mall, ate loads of pork and beef and Amish noodles and pastries. I drove all over Iowa City and hung out with my cousins and visited schools. I went to the 4th of July parade and saw lots of really awesome John Deere tractors. I watched the fireworks and didn't get a single bug bite, which was a miracle. We also stuffed a flat rate box full of snacks and football reading material for my cousin in the Army in Iraq.

So what did I haul home?

1. two tone pink Jansport sling backpack (hello I will be going back to school in Jan and the outlet mall price = $18)
2. one skein of Jiffy thick and quick (which i am knitting right now and i swear it is like knitting with rope!)

Hmm, maybe it would have been better to list what I didn't buy. There really was stuff that i didn't buy and all most everything was seriously on sale. This also was my last allotted shopping trip of the summer since i am making myself save money for school and The Big Move. How boring is that?

Coming Home

So if i survive closing the books this week, my reward is a fun-filled weekend in IOWA!!!!! YAY!!! I get to see cousins, beautiful fields full of corn and Deeres and I might just get to see my beloved N--he hasn't said hell no yet. I will be taking my other Love--my Mac and some dishcloth yarn. There's no point in bringing loads of projects cause i'll be going all over the place and there's just not a lot of time to craft, but plenty of crafty stores to visit. and the cheese factory and the bakery in kalona, yum yum yum.....

what else is going? um i spent the weekend with Sunshine, which was loads of fun. learned the true meaning of rice and potatoes and had some interesting encounters with the neighbors. i also found the cutest hello kitty fabric at Joann's. i heart hello kitty big time.

i promise i will have much more interesting things to say once i return from my much too short trip to the land of my birth.

yarn slut

So it's been a gloomy day. Kinda rainy, but my shipment of yarn from Knit Picks arrived today....Merino wool, how I love thee. Yes, i am a certified Yarn Slut. I have no projects in mind for this yarn, all i know is that it was pretty and i wanted it. LOL...i am only hooked on three things, yarn, my mac and mountain dew. there are far worse things then those.

I got my school acceptance letters today. very happy. now it's a matter of deciding for sure which schools and which semester to start, because now my boss is trying to find a way to keep me somehow, so when i finish my accounting degree, i can be put in the same rotation program that N was in. which i would love to do, but if they don't come up with something concrete soon it's going to be too damn bad because i will go home and go to one of the schools on my list. either way, i will be on the fast track plan to moving home to Iowa. i don't really want to go to school down here, but i would do it if there was a guaranteed thing with the company, cause i love the industry i'm in, i just need to get a piece of paper so that i can get the pay and recognition for the work i already do. lol.

Not much is really going on this weekend, just a quite weekend away from work. i went to the library and heard the B'ville Symphony play at the H.O.T. market. they sounded really good. Next weekend I get to see Sunshine. YAY!!!! I haven't seen Sunshine in like a bazillion years (like maybe a month or so, but that seems like a long time in my libra world).

Long Weekend

So it's Memorial Day Weekend and I have it all off, and no plans cause on Friday is the big flight out to Cali to A's, so that we can drive back home. Last weekend's trip had it's good points, but the company I had kind of put a damper on things. M is just not a good person to travel with. Plus she had her mind made up about Rockford before she even got there and she decided not to relocate with the company after all. I enjoyed Rockford though.

What have I done this weekend so far?

1. Watched seasons one and two of The Facts of Life
2. Shipped off 40 hats to the Dulaan Project
3. Cleaned up the nasty bathroom ( i am making the sis clean up the toothpaste blobs)
4. Read the new issue of BUST
5. Made three more hats ( i even felted one!!my first time to felt...so much fun and i wasn't even doing it the technical way, i just kinda of winged it)
6. Steam cleaned carpet and washed my sheets ( see the reoccuring theme here?)
7. Drooled over yarn and yarn gadgets in my magazines


I have also been listening to Rob Thomas' solo album which is really great and I can't believe that I didn't buy it sooner. Same thing with Carrie Underwood's cd, also pretty good. I miss N. He called me at work on Wednesday, which was very nice. I felt special, I just wish I would've been able to talk longer. I also met his replacement this week, B who is the total opposite of N and very happily married. He starts on the 5th. Tuesday is the intern's first day. He is 22 and from Iowa City (sounds like N only younger--freaky coinky dink). I don't want him to be attracted to me but I hope he is more fun than B. there's just me and AR that are in my generation. everybody else is over 30 or else 60 and totally BORING....I guess I shouldn't expect excitement in an accounting dept., but I know a lot of fun people in accounting, they just don't work at my unit. This is going to be a very stressful closing week for a lot of reasons, but especially since I will only be at work for 3 days. Time crunch, eh? Lucky for me my big stuff is the first day of closing. Hopefully, I don't have any big technical problems like I had last month.


Hmm, I guess not much else is going on really. I will have more exciting tales to tell after I get back from California.

Live from the Ramada

M and I made it to the Ramada in Rockford, IL. Driving through Illinois is very pretty and boring. Not really any places to stop on I-88 once you leave the Quad Cities. I made a wish going over the mighty Miss. The continental breakfast at this hotel sucks but they did have mountain dew on the rocks and chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us when we finally arrived at 7:30 pm! So, that to me is good. M is the worst traveler ever but I knew that. We did get to see T in Des Moines. We met her for a lively lunch at Chillis. She only has one more year left of law school. Yay! My beloved N called me at 3pm which was a shock because he never makes phone calls before his free minutes start. I feel loved now. He sounds stressed and tired, but what do you expect. He doesn't have a place yet in Des Moines and he thinks he might get the clearance to start work next week.

My favorite thing about this hotel is the free wireless internet. So easy to use and it's fast. Makes me happy. My Mac likes it too. I am so glad that I decided to bring Mac with me. I am listening to my favorite podcast while M is sawing logs. She is cranky, but not unbearable yet. I don't think she's going to take the job here, because when it comes down to it, she says she can't bear to leave her family, but I just think she is a total chicken butt. She is deathly afraid of change.

i have knitted four hats so far on this trip and I will probably finish hat five after this post. I have excess energy even after a 12 hour road trip. I did get to pop into my favorite outlet mall by Iowa City and I added a navy blue polo and a light blue polo to my collection because they were on sale at the Old Navy Outlet store for $6.99!!

My stress level is lower right now, cause I am in Illinois, which is almost like my home state of Iowa. Just hanging out in Iowa gave me this Zen-like peace. Especially when i heard from N. I just needed to hear that he was okay. I worry about everyone that I love, but especially a selected few who I know are going through a lot, like him and A's car woes and my cousin A who is recovering from a rough tonsillectomy .


Fun Observations from the trip so far:

1. Pump Factory Road in Illinois
2. World's largest truck stop is very swank and located in Walcott, IA
3. John Deere historical site (where the plow that changed the world was made--i am so going to try and stop there on the way home. it is the family business and my legacy.)

One Skein Secret Pal Answers

So I just got my info for the One Skein Secret Pal swap and I am totally stoked about it. These were the suggested questions to ask my secret pal, so I thought I would be nice and post my answers on my blog in case my pal was reading it.

1. What yarn is most like your personality?

Hmm, tough question. anything that is bright like hot pink or shades of the ocean-purples, greens, blues. I love texture. I love the feel of regular wool and alpaca, merino.

2. Favorite color to knit/crochet with?

hot pink or aqua

3. Have you ever used variegated, or magic yarns?

Yes, I love watching the colors change, especially the ones that are self-striping

4. Do you tend to favor certain fibers when choosing yarns?

It depends on the purpose. I use a lot of acrylic yarn for children's and charity projects cause it holds up well.

5. Do you prefer to work with center-pull or traditionally wound balls of yarn?

I don't live very close to a real yarn shop, so i usually end buying yarn that is center-pull cause that's what stores like Michaels or Wal-Mart carry. Wound balls are fine, I'm just not very good at winding them myself. Someday I will buy a ball-winder!

6. Have you ever worked with organic yarns or are you interested in trying them?

I don't have easy access to them, because I like to touch yarn before I buy. I love all yarn and I am always open to trying yarn that is outside the box.

7. How many/what projects have you made in the last year?

I'm not sure how many since i crochet and knit. I have made countless hats for charity, amigurumi, dishcloths, afghan squares.

8. Will you be knitting any gifts this year?

I'm sure I will, I'm just not sure yet.

9. What is your favorite one skein project?

The cupcake and the felted striped tote.

10. How much yarn do you have in your stash and how do you store it?

Do I want to admit to this? I really don't know cause it would take awhile to count and I don't have my ten-key at home. At least three good sized plastic tubs.

I have a skein of aran yarn my mom bought me in Ireland and two skeins of handspun wool yarn that I bought in Russia that I can't bare to use, cause it's like souviener yarn and it's too pretty and special.

12. Do you knit less or differently in the summer?

I don't crochet or knit less, I just crank up the A/C and turn on my ceiling fan!!

13. Do you belong to any knitting groups (online or offline)?

Nope. I don't belong to any knitting groups. I do hang out at craftster.org a lot, and i listen to a lot of knitting podcasts and read a lot of knitting related blogs.

May Day

Well, N's last day at work is this friday. He found a dream job back home in Iowa and the opportunity is too awesome to pass up. What does this mean for us? God only knows. He's been sort of avoiding me and not telling me why other than it's nothing that I've done and not to worry about it. I believe it's due to severe stress. They are not making his departure very easy and we just had the closing week from hell. My dad took us out for lunch on Thursday. I was shocked. It was completely his idea and he paid. My dad doesn't do that willingly for just anyone.

Tomorrow my sis and I are going to Tar-jay. Retail therapy is good. I also made a kick-a t-shirt purse out of two worn out Hard Rock Cafe shirts which I have posted on my Flickr blog. It's #82 from the Generation T book, which is an awesome book that I checked out from my local public library, which has been getting a lot of cool and new crafty books lately. LIBRARIES ROCK!!!

My ticket to California has been purchased. I am playing hooky from work that friday and flying out there. Then A, baby L and the big ass dog are driving cross country back to Kansas. I can't wait cause we get to go through nevada, arizona and new mexico. I will get to see the twinkling lights of Las Vegas. Hell yeah!

My sis and i also are planning on making a trip to Austin, TX this summer. Why because I have never been to Texas and my sister wants to go down there when she doesn't have to go to a job fair or interview and I picked Austin cause it's this musical/art mecca that is really supposed to be cool. I am just all about the road trips.

Of course, I will be sneaking in a trip or two to my home state of Iowa to visit, N, T, and the fam. I miss them all so much and N hasn't even officially left yet.

One Skein Secret Pal

Eventually i will figure out how to put buttons on my blog.

I love all yarn, whether it is fuzzy, wool, or acrylic. The closest yarn shop to me is a good hour away, so if i don't order it online, then I am left with whatever is stocked at Wal-Mart or Hobby Lobby. So if my secret pal has some real wool or some Rowan yarn, I would gladly accept the scraps in any color. really any yarn would be cool. my favorite shades to knit or crochet with are shades of aqua, purple, hot pink and greens found in the Irish countryside. i do not like yellow. I would love to learn how to spin yarn someday, but i lack a teacher and spinning supplies, so I really admire people that can spin their own yarn.

Mac Love

This post is brought to you by my brand new Mac. I love my Powerbook and it loves me back. It understands me. LOL. I promise that I am not going crazy, just in serious awe. So yesterday at work, this massive breaker blew and the computer room lost power. Therefore, we didn't have our server, so it made things a huge PAIN IN THE ASS. Hopefully, it is up and running tomorrow. Things go so much faster, especially when I can access my files stored out in Neverland.

I haven't transfered music or major files yet. However, I did use my digital camera and importing photos into iphoto is so freaking easy. it gets them off your camera, and you can start editing right away. just like that. I can't wait to take her own road trips. I can even burn dvds and all that fancy stuff. i have bluetooth capabilities too. I can type in bed if I want to. LOL.

Wacky Weekend

So this weekend was supposed to be quiet and boring. Which it was until maybe Saturday evening. N came down late Saturday evening and we hung out with my sis and went out for ice cream. Then he went home cause he was getting really tired and it was starting to storm.

The big stuff happened this morning. My sis and I were leaving for Wally World when we noticed a puddle in our garage between the trash can and the water heater closest. We thought that the garbage was leaking, so we decided to fix it when we got back. We get home and move the trash can and there's nothing leaking from it. So we think O FUCK. We move the stuff away from the water heater closet door and open it up. It was like the floods of '93 in there. We catch my parents at the airport pre-take off but my dad's phone is not getting much signal. there are a bazillion switches on this thing. and it's gas so i don't want the house to blow up. So i call N for moral support cause his dad is a plumber. meanwhile, my sister is calling every one we know in town cause N lives an hour away, so I wasn't going to make him come down unless there was no one else. Well, K my dad's buddy and a member of our carpool is out running errands. So my sis gets two of her older friends to come out. These dudes are roughnecks and basically jacks of all trades.

Meanwhile, everybody is slowing down in their Mercedes and Lexuses gawking at us, while we are stopping the floods. The roughnecks get it all shut off (including the gas) and K comes up. He talks to my dad via the phone and goes over to Lowes to pick up a water heater. Blah blah blah...my parents come home just as K and the roughnecks are starting to install the new one. Crisis ended. We have hot water so tomorrow I won't have to stink or take a shower god knows where. of course, i'm tired cause of all this and the whole daylight savings thing. what a way to end a weekend.

So how's my new laptop? Well, don't ask me. The UPS guy is holding it hostage until Monday afternoon cause this is the one time they want a signature. Not to mention the fact that they have dumped $3000 dell computers for the neighbors in our yard when we weren't even home. My sis left 15 mins before the UPS guy came. When I ordered it, my mom wasn't going to St. Louis with my dad. She decided this about wednesday night. Yay for me. I want my laptop love!!!!! I'm not bitter, i'm just having a trying time right now is all.

As a result of this weekend, I will forever know what the water shut off valve thingy for the water heater looks like. I will pay for expediated shipping on laptops. Those are a sampling of lessons I have learned this weekend.

Making the Switch

So I never thought I would really ever buy an Apple computer. Or a laptop. And I just did. An apple powerbook G4 12 inch. way faster and newer than my sony vaio pc from 2001 (which I still love and plan on keeping). I'm bummed though because I can't find a laptop case for it that isn't black and ugly! i'm not putting my baby in an ugly laptop purse. hell no. I also got the air port express so i can be all fancy wireless and do really cool geeky things with it. N doens't know that I actually broke down and bought it yet cause he's in Omaha at his sister's 30th birthday. I miss him a little, especially since this coming week is end of the month so we will both be busy and stressed out at work all week. yuck. I haven't decided what I will name my laptop yet. My ipod is Spanky, but i haven't thought of anything good yet. Anyways, it's not the top of the line, but i didn't want to spend 2000 on a laptop. Bye bye tax money. Thank god there was a rebate on it. I can compute in bed! LOL. Sunshine, I promise I will bring it with me the next time I visit.

I finally uploaded crafty pics to Flickr. Normally i update more frequently, but i got behind a little with my vaio being out of commission while N was fixing it and then I had to re-load all my files and essential programs like itunes. I finished my stuff for the hello kitty swap. Now I'm working on the Jim Henson swap. I am almost done with a Kermit the frog design I've been cross stitching. I also made more bottle cap magnets this weekend. they are so easy and fun and then i have little momentos of all the booze i've drank (and soda caps too).

A new dollar tree store opened up by my house. it's clean and has some good stuff. there is a lot of scary stuff too like $1 pregnancy tests and several sightings of white trash.

hey there

Well there are no good excuses. other than work and the boy. he will be out of town visiting some random relatives so I am going to see Sunshine and his new place. yay! we get to eat junk food and shop. it will be awesome. I don't have carpool this week so that has been awesome. Last night I went to Hobby Lobby on my way home and found some really cute mini Care Bears cross stitch kits. I didn't get a damn thing done for my swaps, but I'll daydream some ideas up at work.
